Department of Polymer Engineering

The Program 

The discipline of Polymer Engineering involves studying relationships that exist between structure and properties of polymeric material. An understanding of structure-properties correlations develops a better understanding in designing & fabrication of plastic products. 

 The four-year (eight semester) program comprises of lectures and practical’s designed to fulfill requirements of the plastics industry. Industrial Internship are a mandatory degree completion requirement, along with Final-Year Design Project which are usually industry based, provide an opportunity & develop skill in students to apply engineering principles learned during the Program. Seminars conducted by subject experts provide an exposure to latest technology trends in the field of polymers. 

NTU Karachi Campus, Plastics Technology Centre(PTC) was established by Government of Pakistan at Karachi in 1986. The Centre was initially supported by UNIDO/UNDP by providing machinery & technical experts, later on Government of Japan through JICA up-graded the processing and testing facilities. Besides academic program, short courses, seminars and testing services are offered to the industry. 

The Centre aims to develop technical know-how and professional competence in people involved in the manufacture of plastic products through better utilization of manpower, material and machinery. The industrial scale processing machines gives our students a hands-on exposure to real-life production operations and issues involved in mass production operations. 

The Centre can truly boast as a premiere facility in offering education and industrial services to the plastics processing & consumer industry across Pakistan.  

Departments 

The departments are managed by foreign qualified professionals with a team of trained technicians. 

1. Technical Service 

The Centre houses all major plastics processing processes, this gives it an unparalleled advantage in offering technical advice in the areas like Product Development, Optimization and Trouble-shooting of production operations like Injection Moulding, Extrusion, etc., 

2. Testing 

The laboratories are well equipped to conduct Mechanical, Physical, Analytical, Thermal, Rheological etc, tests. Samples across the country are received for testing & approval purposes. From construction to automotive sector, all are Centre’s satisfied clients. 

3. Training 

The Centre was pioneer in conducting short training programs in plastics. It has conducted vocational training programs which are recognized by regulatory Boards. Its technician’s training program is backed by the plastics industry. 

PTC has the privilege of being the only Centre approved by EDEXCEL Foundation/ BTEC London(U.K.) to offer qualifications in polymer. 

The professional training programs offered are customized according to specific requirements of the clients, these can be conducted at client’s site or at Centre’s corporate training facilities. Clients from pharmaceutical, consumer and automotive sectors are our clients.

Instrument & Process Control Lab

Overall Aims & Objectives of the Lab:The main objective of this lab course is to give a general understanding to all the basic and key concepts of instrumentation, necessary for the process control. The primary aim of process control is to maintain a process at the desired operating conditions, safely and efficiently, while satisfying environmental and product quality requirements. A proper application of process control can improve the safety and profitability of a process plant.

In this lab Students are expected to learn about the control of ‘Process Parameters’ such a temperature, pressure, level and flow etc. At the end of this lab course students are thought to develop an ability to install, maintain and calibrate the various instruments being used in different process industries.

To investigate the Tuning Parameters of P, PI, PID control actions at the Flow Process Station. Also determine the Optimum Tuning Parameter by using hit and trail method.

To determine the Time Constant of mercury-bulb thermometer dipped in an oil bath. Also plot a graph b/w Y(t)/A and t.

The Building(s) 

The Polymer Engineering Department is housed in two purpose built blocks comprising of a total covered area is 60,000 sq. ft. The spacious lecture halls are located near the faculty rooms to assist discussions and after class activities. The Testing & Processing laboratories are located in both the blocks. The facilities have two stand-by generators (200 Kva each) to ensure uninterrupted power supply. 

A state of the art auditorium with a seating capacity of 250 persons is available to conduct seminars and student activities.

The degree program has been designed after considering the local & international industrial scenario. The graduating engineers have an opportunity to pursue careers as Engineers, Scientist and Managers in the polymer industry.
